Born in 1940, a former student of the École des Arts Appliqués à l’Industrie in Paris, Jean-Paul van Lith has been established as a ceramist on the Côte d’Azur since 1962. Producing a wide variety of decorative pieces for which he obtained prizes and distinctions, numerous works are present in French and foreign museums, as well as at the Élysée Palace. In 1991, all of his work was the subject of a retrospective at the National Ceramic Museum of Sèvres.
He is part of a generation of artists from the south of France living alongside Vallauris, imbued with the heritage of Picasso and Fernand Léger. For more than 60 years, Jean-Paul van Lith, one of the most important creators in the French decorative arts, has designed and produced in his workshops numerous models for tableware and perfumery: Roger Vergé, Chacok, Lanvin…
Often requested by the ceramic and glass industry: Porcelaine Virbent, Cristalleries de Portieux, Hartzviller and Stephens in Portugal, numerous references and press articles bear witness to this. Since 1963, its workshops in Valbonne and Biot on the Côte d’Azur have produced numerous creations in earthenware, porcelain, glass, crystal and opaline in the great French tradition of luxury and quality; This concerns tableware, perfumery, lighting, tiling as well as utility and decorative pieces of all sizes.
Apart from these productions, van Lith carried out state commissions linked to architecture for around ten years within the framework of the 1%, monumental sculptures in concrete, metal and ceramic in collaboration with Jean Derval. Van Lith also collaborates with various artists for 4-handed pieces, an experience that he particularly likes to share with ceramists and goldsmiths, Vincent Buffile, Claude Pelletier.
In addition to ceramics, he has also worked as a glass artist since 1980, developing a baroque and varied body of work. At the same time, he worked as a designer in 5 major in France and Portugal from 1980 to 2000. He has written extensively on ceramics glass and tinsmithing, and ran a workshop in Valbonne for ten years. Passionate knowledge of the crafts, van Lith published “La Céramique, Dictionnaire Encyclopaedia” in 2000, “Fil de Fer et Fer Ferblanterie” in 2002 and “Dictionnaire du verre tradition et heritage” in 2016. This passion has also led him to become President of Ateliers d’Art de France, and to the Conseil des Métiers d’Art of the French Ministry of Culture.
In recent years, van Lith’s work has been divided between ceramics, his lifelong passion, and painting, which he has always practised. and painting, which he has always practised. Recent exhibitions have enabled a new public to discover this facet of his work. to discover this facet of his immense career.
9th Sèvres Ceramics Biennial. At the SEL in Sèvres from 16 May to 2 June 2024
True to its goals, the ArtCeram association presents its eighth ceramics biennial at the SEL de Sèvres. ArtCeram once again presents us with a remarkable overview of contemporary ceramics, foreign and national, as seductive as it is suggestive!
The applications were particularly numerous, which shows the place taken by this event in the world of current ceramics and the audience which is thus recognized for it. We are all the more happy because Arceram, since its beginnings, has always been able to remarkably reconcile the daring of modernity and happy fidelity to the principles of tradition.
